After clearing the fault codes a few weeks back, another scan has shown this one again: 5088 - Sensor gearbox selector switch. In fact, it was the only fault in the transmission this time. I'm told that this is not in the gear stick selector itself, but right up inside the trans on my 2004 X5.

The first thing I noticed was that when driving at steady speed around 50mph the rpm slightly fluctuates. This doesn't happen when driving steady but faster 70 - 80mph.

The needed oil change on the distribution gearbox (VTG) is also pressing as it increases wear on the transmission (and a transmission breakdown is the economic write-off in your situation). The glow-plug related errors indicate a past electrical fault, unless you experience starting problems on cold weather you could treat them with less
The problem is the P/N circuit inside the TR (transmission range) sensor. +++++ This prompts me to think I may have the same issue. The key word - "sensor". BMW car has as many sensors as one can imagine. What I did was to make sure I switch gears first between "Park", "Reverse", "Neutral" and "Drive" mode and then start my X5. Voila. Done. The
Automatic Transmission stuck. I have a 2001 BMW E53 X5 3.0L and just replaced the engine. When I tried the initial start, lights came on but wouldn't start. I tried to move the shifter but it wouldn't go so I thought when I hooked it up I didn't put the shifter in the correct position on the transmission and that corrected the problem, I think
A few ways to tell if your BMW X5 transmission is starting to develop an issue: You have trouble shifting into any gear. You select the gear and the vehicle doesn't go anywhere. There is excessive movement in the shifter. You could be causing more damage the more you drive, also with the transmission not going into reverse, there is a chance

It could be simply dirty fluid or a clogged filter which restricts fluid flow within the transmission and a fluid and filter change will fix this.
