Format: Full Frame / FX. Focus: Autofocus. Lens Mount: Canon EF. Release Date: 2006-08-24. MSRP Price: $1099. Made in: Japan. Infrared Rating: Good. Production Status: In Production. Lens Description: The EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is a lightweight, compact L Series telephoto zoom lens with Image Stabilizer.
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L IS USM Lens has even better image quality and of course, IS. Relative to the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens, the f/4 IS has more CA at the longer half of the focal length range and more vignetting at f/4. Otherwise, the both of these lenses have impressive image quality.
The 300 f/4 accepts extenders for optional 420 and 600mm focal lengths, but the 70-299mm range is noticeably absent. The 70-300 L is weather sealed and has a newer IS system. Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM Lens adds to the 300 f/4L Lens 100mm and a 1 stop reduction in max aperture. Notable is that this lens lacks IS.
Under ideal circumstances, I'd like to buy the Canon EF 70-200mm L IS F2.8 but the price of it is almost the double of the price of the F4. F4 seems to be a very sharp lens, IS compensation is up tp 3.5-4 stops. It is also lighter in weight, it won't break one's back. F2.8 is as sharp (at least when used at F4), IS compensation is aound 3 stops.

For reference, I use the EF 70-200/4L IS currently as my main lens in this range. The EF lens (first version) is narrower and uses 67mm filters, but it's longer than the RF, especially with the adapter. For hiking I'm not really interested in wildlife photos so can live with 200mm. But the 100-400 reviews well.
