La fanciulla del West ( The Girl of the West) is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Guelfo Civinini and Carlo Zangarini, based on the 1905 play The Girl of the Golden West by the American author David Belasco. Fanciulla followed Madama Butterfly, which was also based on a Belasco play.
The opera has a libretto in Italian by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, and is based on Henri Murger’s 1851 novel Scènes de la vie de bohème. At the Met Opera, conductors Carlo Rizzi and Marco Armiliato take to the podium to lead this revival of Zeffirelli’s La Bohème staging. La Bohème Met Opera Cast
La Boheme while heart-rending does also have one or two humorous spots. Particularly in Act 2, primarily Musetta's entrance and Marcello's reactions to her and the men's shock over the expensive bill. The story is beautifully constructed and never feels forced or superficial. The performances are top drawer.
Puccini sets the scene with music, so listen out for sound effects. At the beginning of Act III as snow begins to fall on stage, the flutes and the harp take up a beautiful melody. Soak it up — it captures the feeling of fresh snow flakes on cold noses. A scene in Opera Australia's 2019 production of La Bohème. Photo: Keith Saunders.
